NYFC held its first annual Educational Conference on April 14, 2009 at John Jay College to help high school students in foster care plan for post-secondary education. The conference was a joint effort between NYFC, the Administration for Children’s Services, foster care agencies, and educational organizations throughout New York City. Members of NYFC’s Youth Advisory Board were on hand to set up, check in the attendees, and direct participants throughout the day.

The conference included a panel of Guardian Scholars, past Spirit Award winners, and Youth Advisory Board members who discussed their educational experiences. Guidance counselors were seated at each table to answer individual questions about the college process. The students also attended workshops on topics like financial aid, the application process, and information about SUNY, CUNY, and local community colleges.

The event was a huge success, and the students came away excited about the prospect of attending college. We are excited to host the conference again this year!
