Application Eligibility requirements
In order to apply for NYFC’s Back-to-School Package Program, each applicant must verify that he or she meets the following requirements:

  • Was formerly in foster care in New York City until at least age 18
  • is currently under the age of 25
  • Is registered to attend college or a vocational training program for the upcoming semester

If an applicant meets the eligibility requirements, he or she should submit The Back-to-School Package application to Ellen Ampofo (eampofo@newyorkersforchildren.org). Please note, each application must include an unofficial copy of the applicant’s college transcript and a class schedule for the next semester.
Youth who are currently in foster care must be registered for the Back-to-School Package Program by their agency workers.

Over the years, NYFC has sent thousands of Back-to-School Packages to students in foster care, providing these deserving scholars the tools necessary to thrive during their educational or vocational experiences. NYFC is committed to providing these young people with the resources and support they need to become self-sufficient and successful adults. Each Back-to-School Package is valued at $1,000 and includes a laptop, a Metrocard to help students travel to and from classes, and an Amazon gift card for books.

The Need

Youth in foster care face specific challenges around education. Only 37% of foster youth go onto college, compared to 60% of all high school graduates1. Enrolling is just the beginning, only 2% of foster care alumni ages 25-34 had received a bachelor’s degree, compared to 28% of young adults nationally2. While there are many barriers to graduation, lack of access to fundamental tools should not be one of them.
