On June 2, 2009 New Yorkers For Children hosted the Sports Network to Success event at Chelsea Piers, featuring athletes, sportscasters, doctors, writers, and many other professionals from the sports industry. Panelists included Justin Tuck, defensive end for the New York Giants; Alonzo Mourning, former player for the Miami Heat and founder of Alonzo Mourning Charities; Dr. Marvell Scott, sportscaster and sports doctor; Roland Betts, Founder and Chairman of Chelsea Piers; George Pyne, President of IMG Sports & Entertainment; panel moderator Mike Lupica, New York Daily News sports columnist and bestselling author; and many others. Nearly 100 young people in foster care listened as the panelists told stories of their backgrounds and stressed the importance of getting an education. After the panel presentation, panelists joined the youth in round table discussions where the young people asked direct questions and engaged in conversations with each of them.
Members of the Friends Committee and Board of Directors helped to make this event one of our most successful to date, including Selita Ebanks, Kevin Liles, Alina Cho, Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos, Maggie Betts, Ashley McDermott, Susan Burden, Norma Becker, Alexandra Becker, Marisa Arredondo, Martin Gibson Dessoffy, Julie Macklowe, Ayla Farnos, Alison Harmelin, Lydia Fenet, Susan Shin, Allison Aston and Rory Hermelee.
The youth in attendance also participated in a workshop presented by FEGS, where they learned about career options and the sports industry. NYFC thanks FEGS for their support!
